Like all great men he was a complicated man in a complicated situation. But he created the first democracy in Latin America and even enabled the wave of liberty and justice beyond his own Venezuela. Also, he was the first indigenous leader to overcome the racist colonial and postcolonial regimes in the region for 500+ years since the Spanish conquest.
